The Talking Heads @ CW Post 1978

Talking HeadsBack in 1978 I was attending CW Post Center of Long Island University. I was a communications major. I aspired to be a radio DJ like my radio heros Vince Scelsa & Dave Herman from WNEW FM in New York. There were other reason that brought me back to school … and yes Bruce was one of them.

I also experienced a friend dying from carbon monoxide poisoning because he was too drunk to get into his house. He slept in his car with the motor running so he’d stay warm … and never woke up. But I certainly did! I didn’t want my legacy to be one of drinking and drugging in some backwater town in the Jersey pine barrens.

Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young …

So back to school I went. On some level it didn’t matter what I went for, anything was better than Lanoka. I’d still have my friends there …. but it was time to get on with my life.

Sorry for the long winded and somber introduction but sometimes you have to put things in historical context. I’ve always been into music, on either side of the stage or either end of the camera. Taking picts of other bands, or being in my band, or just playing for myself on my trusty Taylor. I’ve photographed a lot of bands in my time, Talking Heads, Mink Deville, The Police, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Gang of Four, The A’s, Jr Smoots and many others … national and local.

I’ve posted newly scanned picts of The Talking Heads at CW Post circa 1978. God those were good years! There was so much new music happening. Earthshattering new music. I’ve always been glad to have been there to witness so much of it first hand, either through live shows, or playing so much new music on my WCWP radio show.

Hope you enjoy! :)

Hey Joe, Thanks for posting these images. That was my first Talking Heads concert, memorable in its own right but now I have the images to reinforce my memories! Craig

Hi Craig …

Yeah it was my first time too. They still had that new band smell. They were so awkwardly awesome! The second time I saw them was in 1980 at the Heatwave Festival in Canada. By that time they had developed into this whole other band … but still very much the Talking Heads!

Happy to have have reenforced those memories. 🙂

I had an interesting conversation in the summer of 1978 with a prof of archeaology fm C.W. Post. He seemed then to be in his 50s, athletic, and of average height. Any ideas who that could have been? Thanks.

Hi Steven …

Sorryto say … I didn’t know any archaeology professors from Post. I was a communications & film major in my 4 years there.

Thanks for stopping by.

Saw Pink Talking Fish at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester last night. A tribute band to Talking Heads, Pink Floyd and Phish. Reminded me of the 1978 Talking Heads Concert that I went with on a date for my 21st birthday while a student at CWPost. He was a photographer and had gotten front row seats. Did a search today to see what I could find online for that concert- and your photos came right up. Great times and great music at that college. Jerry Garcia and Billy Joel had also played there while I attended.

Hi Nancy …

It’s a small world … especially with the interwebs! Saw quite a few great shows while I was at Post … I was there from 78 to 82. I remember Elvis Costello playing Post as well around that time, also remember Plasmatics playing the Post cafeteria. My friend Pete Irwin booked that show, and many others in his time at Post.

Had a lot of fun & saw a lot of bands during my time at Post, My Father’s Place & multiple places in NYC & Asbury Park, NJ.

Thanks for stopping by! : )

Hard to believe the Talking Heads show at Post was 40 years ago. I graduated 6 weeks later. Lost touch with everyone other than my two roommates. Kind of thought I might see Glen Kaufman’s name playing sax locally at some point but never have. Think his engagement party, that you were taking photos at, in Nov ’78 was last time I saw either of you. Can’t remember Tony’s last name – Glen’s roommate at Post hall who went out with my roommate for a bit. Tony had worked as a chef and fed us well when he cooked. Good to see you stayed with the photography. Always wished I went with something more creative than accounting. Accounting can be creative I guess , but typically not legsl if too creative. Tried a pottery class my last semester- it didn’t go well. The Talking Heads concert is one of the many Post highlights. Stay well.

hi, i was the guy who booked the heads into cw post.

I can’t believe I didn’t see this until now! OMG!

Funny, I thought Peter Irwin was booking back then … guess it must have been later..
