Rockpile @ Heatwave

heatwave-posterBeen scanning like crazy! Here are my photos of Rockpile With Nick Lowe & Dave Edmonds @ Heatwave 1980. Don’t know what more to say than what I’ve said in my other posts so far.

This was the first time I had ever seen Nick Lowe, Dave Edmonds, or Rockpile. On that note alone … it was pretty cool. Add to the mix the rest of the bands playing that day … it was pretty amazing!

The Heatwave festival took place on an overcast summer day in Mosport Park , Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada on August 23rd, 1980. The list of bands that had played included Rockpile, The Pretenders, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello And The Attractions, and others.

  1. Dig the photos and have been a fan of Dave’s since I heard “I Hear You Knockin'” in Sweden off of Radio Luxembourg in ’70. My band opened the show for Rockpile many years later all up and down the west coast of the US, where Dave was really kind to us. (Nick, not so much! Still love his music!) Several years later (our band was signed and exec produced by George Harrison on the Dark Horse label) I got a tpae through George to Dave. We have since become good friends (along with his wife, Cici) and Dave has recorded 3 of my tunes and accidentally turned one tune onto The Stray Cats (he was saving it for himself and made the mistake of playing it for Brian!) All the best, Joe…..Michael

    1. Hi Michael …

Thanks … glad you like the photos. I’ll have to go check out your website. :)

Always liked Dave and Nick, but I think I like Nick’s music more as a solo artist. Though that was the first and last time I got to see either of them. But that was one great day of music!

Funny …. I met Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats right before he and the band left for England backing the 80s. We were both attending CW Post Center of Long Island University. He was sitting in the Commuter Cafeteria and I was walking by, I was decked out that day in Teddy Boy attire as was he. He looked at me and said, “Wow … didn’t think anyone else at t his place dressed like that! What’s your name!” So we chatted a bit & he says … “Oh I’m in this band The Stray Cats, you need to come see us.” So a few weeks go by & I haven’t seen him. Asked a mutual friend about Jim … “Oh he and his band decided to just up and move to England.” That was the last I saw him.
